What actually whitens teeth?
Peroxide-based gels (carbamide or hydrogen peroxide) break down stain molecules in enamel. That is the mechanism used in dentist-supervised trays and in-office sessions. Abrasive powders and charcoal mainly polish the surface and can scratch enamel if used daily.

In-office vs custom trays vs shop kits
- In-office. Higher-strength gel, gum isolation, one or two visits. Fastest shade jump.
- Custom take-home trays. Fitted to your teeth so gel stays on enamel, not on gums.
- One-size strips and pens. Uneven contact, more gum sting, smaller change.
Does teeth whitening damage enamel?
Used as directed under supervision, peroxide gels do not strip enamel. Sensitivity for 24–48 hours is common and usually settles. Open cavities, receding gums, or heavy wear need treatment before bleach.
How long do results last?
Most patients hold a lighter shade for months to a couple of years. Tea, coffee, wine, turmeric, and smoking bring stain back faster. A short top-up is simpler than repeating a full course.
Can I whiten if I have implants or veneers?
No. Ceramic and composite do not bleach. If a front crown is darker than new enamel, we plan shade around the restoration or replace it. Implants themselves are unaffected.
