What is a root canal?
The dentist removes infected pulp from inside the tooth, disinfects the canals, and seals them so you can keep the natural crown. A filling or crown restores strength. It is not “killing the tooth” for no reason. It is treating an infection that antibiotics alone rarely finish.
5 signs you might need a root canal
- Pain that wakes you at night or throbs without chewing.
- Cold or heat that lingers more than a few seconds after the stimulus is gone.
- Swelling of the gum or face on one side.
- A tooth that looks darker than its neighbours after an old knock or filling.
- A gum pimple (sinus tract) that drains and returns.
Is a root canal painful?
With local anaesthesia, most visits feel like a long filling. Soreness for a couple of days after is common. Facial swelling or fever needs urgent care, not waiting for the weekend.
Is extraction better?
Only if the tooth is fractured below bone, canals cannot be cleaned, or bone support is gone. Removing a saveable tooth costs you the root that holds the jaw. An implant can replace it later. Read the implant guide.
